ORCHESTRAS, ENSEMBLES & ChoirS

All students enrolled in Core and Conservatoire Courses are part of one or more groups adapted to their level.

Students who study their instrument outside of London Youth Conservatoire are welcome to join any of these groups. See below specific terms.

All ensembles and choirs currently take place on Saturdays only.

Grade levels are indicative only. Placement in the appropriate group will be made by the Head/Deputy Head of School and teachers according to the level, experience, and age of the student.

Orchestras

  • School Orchestra: Grade 4-8+. This group works on a wide repertoire of classical and modern music and has regular performance opportunities.

  • Junior Orchestras: Grades 1-3. Possibility to be admitted at Prep Test level (trial is compulsory before the decision). A fantastic introduction to the joys of playing music together and an essential experience for all young instrumentalists. They will be amazed by how much they can achieve as a group.

Chamber Ensembles

  • Chamber Ensembles: Grades 6+. A unique opportunity for advanced students to explore the vast repertoire of chamber music.


Jazz Groups

  • Senior Jazz: For Grades 6+ (ideally with an experience of jazz). The group will go through a wide variety of jazz, pop, latin, rock repertoire working on improvisation and performance.

  • Intermediate Jazz: For Grades 4 to 5. Also open to students of grade 5+ standard who have never done jazz before. Students learn to develop their music skills and explore improvisation whilst working on standard jazz, latin, pop and rock classics.

  • Junior Jazz: For Grades 1 to 3. The Junior Jazz groups put together songs and jazz pieces adapted to their level.

Guitar Ensembles

  • Senior groups: Grades 5+. These students take this traditionally solo instrument to explore as a group with a broad repertoire of classical, latin and contemporary music.

  • Junior groups : From Grades 1 to 4. An introduction to working as a group helping pupils work on their rhythm, musicianship and cooperative music skills.

Other Ensembles

  • Percussion Ensemble Age 7+. During this class, children will learn playing techniques on percussion instruments (djembes) via improvisation, composition and team work.


Choirs

  • Chamber Choir Audition only. London Youth Conservatoire’s Chamber Choir is an audition choir that works on a challenging repertoire. The choir regularly performs either at school or outside and with other choirs. Auditions usually take place at the beginning of each academic year. See specific Terms & Conditions.

  • Six other Choirs: Nearly every hour throughout the day, London Youth Conservatoire has a choir running. Fun, dynamic and challenging, students learn to sing in harmony in a wide range of styles and regularly perform at the school.

Information for students registered Only in Ensembles/Choirs

Students registered for ensemble or choir only, will have access to

  • School concerts in their ensemble or choir

  • Students showcase in their ensemble or choir subject to selection  

  • External performance in their ensemble or choir subject to selection  

  • Workshops 

  • Non-priority registration for the London Youth Conservatoire private ABRSM exam session, subject to availability 

Other events such as open platforms, solo slots in showcase concerts, external individual performances, London Youth Conservatoire Awards are reserved for Core and Conservatoire students.

London Youth Conservatoire Orchestra
